Do you have Vertigo?

Vertigo—a sensation of spinning or dizziness—is a prevalent condition that can significantly impact daily life. At Adaptive Life Therapy, we are committed to providing effective interventions to help individuals manage and overcome vertigo-related challenges.

Prevalence of Vertigo

Vertigo affects a substantial portion of the population. A nationally representative study in Germany found that 22.9% of adults experienced dizziness or vertigo in the past year, with vestibular vertigo accounting for 4.8% . The incidence of first-time dizziness or vertigo episodes was 3.1%, and for vestibular vertigo specifically, it was 1.4% . These figures underscore the widespread nature of vertigo and its potential to affect individuals across various age groups.JNNP+2JAMA Network+2ScienceDirect+2

Common Causes of Vertigo

Vertigo can result from various conditions, including:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Caused by displaced calcium crystals in the inner ear, leading to brief episodes of dizziness.

  • Ménière’s Disease: A disorder characterized by fluid buildup in the inner ear, causing vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus.

  • Vestibular Neuritis: Inflammation of the vestibular nerve, often due to viral infections, leading to sudden, severe vertigo.

  • Migraines: Some individuals experience vertigo as a symptom of migraine, known as vestibular migraine.

Management and Treatment Options

Effective management of vertigo involves a combination of therapeutic approaches tailored to the underlying cause:

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT): A specialized form of physical therapy aimed at alleviating symptoms of vestibular disorders. VRT involves customized exercises to improve balance, reduce dizziness, and enhance gaze stability .cosmicgolf

  • Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers: Techniques such as the Epley maneuver are effective in treating BPPV by repositioning the displaced crystals in the inner ear .

  • Medications: Depending on the cause, medications like antihistamines, anticholinergics, or benzodiazepines may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms .

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Stress management, dietary changes, and avoiding triggers can help manage conditions like Ménière’s disease and vestibular migraines.
